About us

We’re a diverse team of copywriters, copyeditors, proofreaders, translators and designers.

Your words are in safe hands

At Tate & Clayburn, customer satisfaction is our number one priority – and it shows. Our clients consistently give us top marks for customer service. We like to think that’s thanks to our responsive and friendly team, our rapid turnaround times, our excellent value for money and, above all, our commitment to quality.

What sets us apart

Not only have we been awarded the internationally recognised ISO:9001 quality management certification, we’re also constantly reviewing and improving our processes so we can offer our customers the best possible service. Our quality assurance process is designed to give you peace of mind.
We put care and thought into each and every job, big or small. We take the time to understand your objectives and requirements in detail. That way we can select the right language expert for the job and deliver exactly what you need. And we’re on hand to go through any queries until you’re completely satisfied with the end result.
Many of our clients have demanding project schedules or tight publishing deadlines – and sometimes those goalposts have to move at short notice. We have the capacity to deliver large projects at speed while still offering the very best customer service. With our flexible team of professional proofreaders, editors, writers and translators, we can usually adapt to whatever you need to throw at us, and with little warning. The bottom line: less stress and more time focused on what you do best.
We aim to work in whatever way suits you best. We can take entire projects off your hands – such as writing, translating and proofreading a website or seeing a report through from the early drafts to the final proofs – but we’re also delighted to slot in seamlessly alongside in-house teams. If you’re London-based, we can even come into your office when face-to-face collaboration is key. Whatever your project, we’re always happy to talk over the best way of working together to lighten your load.
Many of our clients have worked with us for years. Over time, we build up a detailed picture of your needs and get to know your work inside out – it’s just like having an in-house editorial or translation team, but with 100% scalable capacity.
Tate & Clayburn is trusted by clients for whom confidentiality and quality are of paramount importance, such as EU institutions and the UK government.
We’ve made a point of bringing together a team of people who love their jobs and are passionate about getting your work just right. In our annual customer survey 2020, our clients gave us 10 out of 10 for customer service. We’re also a multilingual bunch, so if you don’t feel at home in English, we’ll do our best to communicate in your preferred language.

Our experts

Our in-house team is supported by a fantastic team of hand-picked copywriters, editors, proofreaders, designers and translators. Given our obsession with quality, we’re pretty fussy about who we work with. All our freelancers meet our strict criteria: they excel at what they do, they’ve successfully completed our rigorous onboarding process and of course they’re subject to our strict quality assurance procedures. Once they’re on board, they become key and often long-standing members of our team. This close-knit way of working is what enables us to deliver outstanding work.

Our story

Tate & Clayburn was born out of a shared love of language and a passion for the written word.

Rosie Tate and Peter Clayburn, both armed with first-class degrees in Modern Languages from Oxford University, had forged successful careers in publishing, working for the likes of the BBC, the UN and Oxford University Press.

In 2012, convinced that there was a need for editing and proofreading services that focused on outstanding quality, they founded what was then called The Proofreading Company with the aim of filling that gap.

With happy customers asking for help on an ever greater variety of projects, the business soon started offering design, copywriting and translation services too.

In 2020, the company achieved certification for compliance with internationally recognised quality management standard ISO 9001:2015, demonstrating its commitment to continuous improvement and customer care.

Soon after, The Proofreading Company rebranded as Tate & Clayburn to reflect the range of writing services it had come to offer. The company is now proud to work with an exciting range of clients across the world, from EU institutions and the UK government to a plethora of leading brands and academic researchers.

Quality

At Tate & Clayburn, quality is at the heart of everything we do. We never compromise on it at any stage of our process.

We take the time to understand your expectations before we start work so we can meet or exceed them.
We’ve built our team around a shared ambition of being the best in the business. We only work with professionals who are driven by that goal and fit with our values.
We have a strict quality assurance process in place to make sure the work we produce lives up to our high standards – and yours.
Tate & Clayburn has achieved ISO 9001:2015, the internationally recognised quality certification. This means that we’re held to our promises by independent external auditors and we never lose sight of our commitment to quality.
We strive to make Tate & Clayburn a great place to work for every member of our team so that we can continue to attract the talent we need – and because we love it when our colleagues come to work with smiles on their faces.
