Rosie co-founded Tate & Clayburn in 2012 and her work focuses on overseeing projects for a broad range of government, B2B, third sector and academic clients, as well as managing the business more broadly. A first-class Oxford University languages graduate with an MA in Documentary Filmmaking, she’s an experienced editor, writer and producer, having worked for Oxford University Press, the BBC and Save the Children. As well as running Tate & Clayburn, Rosie loves sampling world cuisines, the cinema and swimming in open water (sometimes year round). She speaks French, Spanish and Italian.
Peter co-founded Tate & Clayburn in 2012 and manages all areas of the business, with a focus on editorial projects for international institutions. He holds a first-class Modern Languages degree from Oxford University and an MA in Conference Interpreting from Geneva’s École de Traduction et d’Interprétation. He has over a decade’s experience as a linguist, working for the likes of the UN and EU institutions. Since Peter started learning languages at the age of 11, he hasn’t been able to stop. He speaks French, Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese and is currently tinkering with Russian.
Fran manages projects, oversees quality management, and generally keeps things shipshape at Tate & Clayburn. She’s our resident whizz when it comes to improving workflows and delivering the best possible customer service, and we rely on her to shoot troubles great and small. Before joining Tate & Clayburn in 2018, Fran worked as an English teacher and freelance editor. She holds a BA in English Language and Literature from Oxford University and an MA in Screenwriting from LCC. In her spare time, Fran enjoys creative knitting projects, making documentaries and volunteering for her local library of things.
Alice leads on all things editorial at Tate & Clayburn. She holds a First in English and Related Literature (University of York) and has publishing experience to match, having worked in-house for Haus Publishing and DK. She also recently obtained a Distinction in her Graduate Diploma in French Studies at Birkbeck and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders. When she’s not waving her editorial wand or wowing us with her eye for detail, Alice can be found cooking up veggie delights, reading novels or running distances that make the rest of us feel exhausted just hearing about it.
Annabelle works across a variety of editing and writing projects at Tate & Clayburn. She has a BA in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford and a PhD in French from New York University, as well as previous experience working in HR and communications. Annabelle’s wide-ranging experience shines through in her work: we’ve yet to find a text that she can’t whip into shape. Having lived in Paris, Berlin and New York, she now throws herself into London’s cultural scene whenever she’s away from her desk, squeezing in as many exhibitions, talks and gigs as possible (and then sharing her recommendations with the team). She speaks French and German.
Izzy brings a thorough approach and meticulous eye to our editing and proofreading projects. She excels when it comes to absorbing complex style guides and perfecting a text in line with a client’s brief. Before joining Tate & Clayburn, Izzy worked as an editor in legal research publishing. She holds a BA in Film Studies from the University of Exeter and an MA in Screenwriting from the London College of Communication. When she’s not editing, Izzy loves writing fiction, playing guitar and practising yoga.
Therese deals with the day-to-day finances of the company and keeps the books ship shape. Previously, Therese taught English at all levels of secondary for over 20 years. As well as having a degree in English and History, she also has an MA in Victorian Studies (University of Leicester) and an MA in Special and Inclusive Education (University College London). Having lived in France and Egypt, Therese speaks fluent French and some Arabic. She enjoys swimming, cooking and getting lost in books or nature.
Our in-house team is supported by a fantastic team of hand-picked copywriters, editors, proofreaders, designers and translators. Given our obsession with quality, we’re pretty fussy about who we work with. All our freelancers meet our strict criteria: they excel at what they do, they’ve successfully completed our rigorous onboarding process and of course they’re subject to our strict quality assurance procedures. Once they’re on board, they become key and often long-standing members of our team. This close-knit way of working is what enables us to deliver outstanding work.
Tate & Clayburn was born out of a shared love of language and a passion for the written word.
Rosie Tate and Peter Clayburn, both armed with first-class degrees in Modern Languages from Oxford University, had forged successful careers in publishing, working for the likes of the BBC, the UN and Oxford University Press.
In 2012, convinced that there was a need for editing and proofreading services that focused on outstanding quality, they founded what was then called The Proofreading Company with the aim of filling that gap.
With happy customers asking for help on an ever greater variety of projects, the business soon started offering design, copywriting and translation services too.
In 2020, the company achieved certification for compliance with internationally recognised quality management standard ISO 9001:2015, demonstrating its commitment to continuous improvement and customer care.
Soon after, The Proofreading Company rebranded as Tate & Clayburn to reflect the range of writing services it had come to offer. The company is now proud to work with an exciting range of clients across the world, from EU institutions and the UK government to a plethora of leading brands and academic researchers.
At Tate & Clayburn, quality is at the heart of everything we do. We never compromise on it at any stage of our process.
Even the best writers need an editor: a trusted reader with one eye on the detail and the other on the bigger picture. Whatever your project, our expert copyeditors will look at every aspect of your writing to take it from good to outstanding.
When you’ve worked hard on a project, you don’t want typos or little inconsistencies to let it down. Our experienced proofreaders will bring a fresh pair of eyes to make sure nothing slips through the net – so you can tick your project off your to-do list with confidence.
Good writing is fine – it’s all around us – but truly great writing can change the world. Literally. We work closely with a team of talented copywriters who can work their magic on any project you throw at them – from punchy web copy to insightful thought pieces.
In an increasingly connected world, communicating effectively in multiple languages can be the key to success. Our skilled linguists will express your ideas accurately and eloquently in a translation you can trust.
We’ve achieved certification for the globally recognised ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard. That means rigorous quality assurance processes, an unyielding focus on customer satisfaction and independent external auditing to hold us to our promises.
Quality, quality, quality. We never let it slip. It’s our watchword, our constant goal and the focus of everything we do.
Great writing is an art form, and it calls for a touch of flair.
Sometimes professionalism means saying no.
We listen with an open mind to what our clients, and our colleagues, need and want.
