Thank you again for all your work in pulling together a fine report. It is no mean feat given the many different voices you had to bring together. Thanks for your flexibility, patience and good humour throughout the process.
Home / Typesetting
Our experienced typesetters put your writing into a professional page layout, ready to be published.
You’ve written, edited and maybe even re-edited your manuscript – so what’s next? If you’re planning to self-publish your book, it needs to look like a book. It needs a professional typesetter.
When you’ve worked so hard on getting your manuscript up to scratch, the last thing you want is for bad formatting to distract your reader – or, worse, stop them from buying your book in the first place.
A professional typesetter knows how to make each page of your book visually appealing, with design choices that fit with your vision and make it easy to read. They know their serif fonts from their sans serif fonts and can spot word stacks a mile off – so your reader stays focused on your writing and not inconsistent word spacing.
The typesetting process transforms your completed draft from a Microsoft Word file or equivalent document into a publication-ready format. For many authors, this is the exciting moment when their work looks like a real book for the first time.
Simply put, book typesetting involves arranging text in a book page composition using typesetting software or other digital tools, such as Adobe InDesign. It might sound straightforward, but typesetting is an art as well as a science. It has its own design rules and principles.
In most cases, typesetting happens towards the end of the publishing process – after editing but before proofreading. This enables the proofreader to review the page layout as part of their usual checks.
Readers never notice good typesetting because they’re focused on the words themselves. But bad typesetting is obvious: perhaps the font size is too small or the line spacing is inconsistent. Maybe there are word stacks (multiple instances of the same word appear directly beneath each other). Or the page margins might be too narrow, meaning the entire page looks cramped.
Any typesetting mistake that catches your reader’s eye not only takes their focus away from your writing but also looks amateur. Getting your book professionally typeset can make a big difference.
The cost of professional typesetting varies depending on factors such as your book’s length, the inclusion of any graphic matter and other elements, and how you want your book interior to look. Get in touch for a free quote or consultation.

Tate & Clayburn were fantastic to work with. Rosie has meticulous attention to detail, we felt in very safe hands. She project-managed our report from start to finish, leading on copywriting, editing, proofing, design and print management. We would have no hesitation in working with her again; it felt like having another member of our core team throughout the project.
I highly recommend Tate & Clayburn for any copy editing or proofreading work. We have dealt with a number of staff in the organisation and each time I have been extremely pleased with the level of customer excellence, interpersonal nature and of course, their technical skills.
We often send large volumes of work, which always need a quick turnaround and we have never been let down by Tate & Clayburn – they have always stuck to deadlines, if not delivered ahead of. They make it very easy to work with them.
Working with Tate & Clayburn has made a very complex process and project so simple for my team. Tate & Clayburn’s close work and oversight to produce the reports, including their understanding of the details that are important, and the cross-cultural challenges that are presented in the process, has allowed us to focus on larger relationships and projects because we know that the reports are in great hands. They’ve been an extension of our team for not only these reports but additional projects that have popped up; their understanding of our complex space and outside perspective has been invaluable to our organization. Simply put: Tate & Clayburn has made much of the work of BGCEL possible and we are grateful for our collaborative partnership.
